Jerry
Goldsmith |
February 10,
1929 - July 21, 2004 Age: 75 |
| Goldsmith's
compositions have virtually defined the musical personality of Star Trek
since the debut of "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" in 1979. That
score went on to be the theme song for Star Trek: The Next Generation. Goldsmith
also wrote the title music for Star Trek: Voyager, along with several other
Trek movies including "Star Trek: First Contact," which many fans
believe to be one of the most inspired scores ever written for a genre film
(or any film for that matter). He's even left his mark on the Star Trek:
The Experience attraction in Las Vegas, with original music for "Borg
Invasion 4D." He also scored "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier,"
"Star Trek: Insurrection," and two years ago, "Star Trek
Nemesis." His soundtrack for "ST:TMP" earned him one of his 17 Academy Award nominations (his one Oscar win was in 1977 for "The Omen"), as well as nominations for Golden Globe and Saturn awards. His Voyager theme song earned one of his five Emmy trophies. "First Contact" won him a BMI Film Music Award, and his audio commentary on the "Director's Edition" DVD of "TMP" earned a Video Premiere Award nomination in 2001. |

With a lot of input from Gene Roddenberry and several outside advisors, Guzman designed the interior sets for "The Cage", and also did preliminary work on the Enterprise's exterior and bridge (the bridge and the Enterprise herself were largely assigned to Matt Jefferies, a 'regular' set designer at that time). A few of Guzman's sketches were reproduced in The Art of Star Trek in 1997. |

On March 5th, 1997, Brent Hershman, the second assistant camera person on the movie Pleasantville drove an hour from home to work in Long Beach for a 6:30 AM call. He worked for nineteen hours. After helping to wrap three cameras and a Power Pod, he reminded his co-workers on the camera truck to drive carefully and left for home. He was exhausted but his eight year old daughter, Ariel, had been sick and he wanted to be with her when she woke up. Midway through his trip, the exhaustion overcame him. He drove his car off the road stricking a telephone pole and was killed. He leaves behind another daughter, Hannah, who is three and a half, and his wife, Deborah. Deeply disturbed by Hershman's preventable death, filmmaker and multiple-Oscar-winning cinematographer Haskell Wexler releases the 2006 Documentary "Who Needs Sleep?" |
